Joey Barton. Can a Leopard change its spots? And do we want Villa to become a zoo?

So it appears that Joey barton has fallen out of favour with Newcastle with the news being released yesterday that Newcastle are releasing him on a free? This has been building for a few months on twitter. From the original tweet back in June explaining about his unhappiness at the clubs decision to sell Kevin Nolan to West Ham

"Great player, leader, captain, person, trainer and mostly a friend for life. Devastated to see him SOLD! "

Now the news is that he is released on a transfer after his latest tweets

"Somewhere in those high echelons of NUFC, they have decided, I am persona non grata"

"One day the board might realise, what the shirt signifies. HONOUR and PRIDE. Thanks for your continued support..........."

"Made to train alone today, how predictable........."
"I also have too much respect for my teammates and the fans, to get in a tit for tat war with them. I have too much self-worth and dignity"

Now the extremeties of these tweets and the image he is building for his self from the image we all know him from is massive.

This modern day Barton is tweeting George Orwell quotes. The Old Barton would of been in some pub looking for trouble.

So, on watching the sky bet section on the skysports website we are apparently 4/1 to sign Joey Barton. The 3rd favourite team, behind Arsenal and Manchester United.

How would he be welcomed by the fans. Would the club risk it after the risk of appointing AM earlier in the summer? I for one would welcome Barton to Villa. You could say he is a risk with his past behaviour. But in the last couple of years he seems to have matured a lot, whether this is due to personal management or just maturing as a person, i think if he would get him on a free he would be worth a shot. Surely he wouldnt demand extortionate wages neither? As would want to come to prove himself! Yes he does have an occasional moment when he sees red. But those moments are becoming less and less.

Yes he stubbed a cigar out once in a young team mates eye and beat someone black and blue on a street. And should never be forgiven for that but he is trying to reinvent himself, and at 28 is in the prime of his career.

We all say we need something in the middle of the park, someone inventive and with a bit of steel. Surely he answers both counts? In gambling you are told to win big you have to take a risk and Joey Barton would certainly be a risk. But it could be a fantastic signing or a complete waste. The question is, Is he worth the risk???

  1. If we could have the footballer then I would definately have him at the Villa. He would add that extra bit of "steal" in the middle of the park and he does like to get forward. He would also offer a lot of support for the CF's. Plus being VERY vocal, he would make a great Captain. He's also pretty decent at taking corners and free kicks, which I do think we will miss this season. However much we dislike Downing at the moment, he was bloody good in a dead ball situation!!

As a person, I wouldn't take him! I think his attitude stinks and he comes across as arrogant. I would be afraid that this would "rub-off" onto some of the younger lads coming through who are just starting to feel the "fame" (so to speak) of being a footballer.

Give me the footballer but not the person....

  2. Unfortunately one comes with the other though doesn't it. I think this is the attitude of most fans up and down the country, the player not the man at our club please, I think he would properly strengthen the MF and if he we don't go for him i feel we do need to get someone of similar style in the middle. Id like to see us have a little money and maybe look at Palacias from Spurs, Think he could do wonders in the middle for us but at 9m and 60,000 wages can't see that happening
