Captaincy at Villa

I see today twitter is awash with the debate of the club captain at Aston Villa and whether Stiliyan Petrov should retain the captaincy due to comments made by Villa legend Dennis Mortimer. To be honest he just said what the majority of the Villa faithful have been saying in the stands for the last 18 months.

I think personally with the new management a change should be made on the pitch too. But the only question is who would you give the band to? The obvious candidates are Collins, Dunne and Given. I have always been in favour of someone at the back being in charge on the pitch, as like your taught in Sunday league, from the back you can see everything and the defensive unit has to naturally be extremely organised. Personally out of the three i would like to see Collins be given the band as i think it would push him on and he would take to it like a duck to water. But either of the other two would do a good job too.

Another statement was made in the Express and Star by Mortimer, saying that he personally wouldn't even have him in the team as he is just a Steady Eddie.

It seems the majority of the Villa fans agree too. How many times over the last 2 years have we all got excited by a promising counter attack for it to be passed to Petrov who then takes the ball stops it and then passes it backwards or sidewards. Its just frustrating.

I would like to see Delph be given more of a chance in the middle this year and slowly start to phase Petrov out, he does not need to be playing every game that is for sure, With Jean Makoun and all the youngsters coming through into the first team this season surely now is the opportunity to move on.

What do you think?
